Analysis

There are 4 teams with only 2 QBs on roster: New England, Indianapolis, San Francisco, Baltimore. Each of these teams has a well-established starter that the team is fully committed to. Consequently, none of these teams are rumored to be overly interested in drafting a QB this year. No team goes into training camp with just 2 QBs. That means that each of these teams is likely to pick up at least one free agent QB between now and mid-June.

  1. I just finished watching the movie Draft Day. I really enjoyed it. I won't say anything about it so as not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it.

As I look at the list of Free Agents, Draft Picks & 4th Stringers there is not one name on that list that I would take before Tebow. The damage done in NY is in perception & not substantive at all. I have got to believe that there are some smart people in the league who know & understand this & would be willing to give this guy a legitamate shot to show the improvements in his mechanics. There has to be some sort of curiosity factor at play now. I know I am very curious to see it.

If Tebow could win games with faulty mechanics, just imagine how good he could be if he now has turned what was once a weakness into a strength.

    1. Here is the link to an article detailing the frienship between Mike Pettine & Urban Meyer. Not sure if this helps Tebow's prospects or not but I guess it can't hurt.

  2. Thanks for this. Great job. I'm curious why you don't have Vince Young on the Free Agent list.

    1. Never mind. I see now that you said "some" of the candidates available.

Nice table Ed. Well done. I agree with your classifications with only two changes; and, they are splitting hairs. I'd classify Thad Lewis & Tarvaris Jackson as YELLOW based on their Contracts and confidence of their Franchises. But, again, splitting hairs. Thanks for putting this together.

  4. Hi Ed: Did you see the picture of Bill Belichick crossing the finish line of a half marathon??? I got a kick out of that. I thought most NFL coaches were known for working around the clock. Where did he get the time to train???

It's getting a little frustrating waiting to see if Tim will be playing football this year. Your chart above is just screaming out for a team to sign him.. There are opportunities all over. Its a shame his popularity makes his options so limited.

Do you like any of the draft prospects??? I think Manziel is definitely worth taking a chance on..He is a difference maker who just may have alot of upside. (If he can stay on the field.) I also like Bortles. I like his size, strength & tempermant.

I still would take Tim ahead of any of them.

  5. My condolences on the news coming out of Cleveland today. Evidently the Browns value something in Vince Young and Tyler Thigpen that they do not see in Tim Tebow, which is not altogether surprising given the motley parade of backups that the League rolled out last season expecting us to believe that they were superior alternatives. Setting all other factors aside, I personally never saw the Browns giving him a shot because it's clear they are going to draft a quarterback early, bringing the "popularity problem" directly into play.

But it's not over. There are other teams out there. And if we're okay with torturing Occam's Razor a bit then Cleveland could still be on the table. You never know, Ed. This could be Farmer and the Browns clinging to status quo thinking, or it could be a Machiavellian masterstroke.

    1. Upon reflection, I'm not too worried about it, because I see it for what it is. The Browns had zero quarterbacks available for their minicamp. The only QB on roster is Brian Hoyer, and I do not think he has been cleared medically. Hard to practice without a QB. So they rented a few throwers for the week.

    2. Now they anticipate signing both players. If they do it's safe to say that if they had any interest in taking a look at TT it would have been at mini camp. Barring some extraordinary circumstance there is simply no room left for him in Cleveland.

    3. I'm still not sure what to make of it. Pettine's exact quote was "“I would think that we would sign at least one coming out of this camp." Both Young and Thigpen have worked directly for the coaching staff before. Young played for QB coach Dowell Loggains at Tennessee. Thigpen played for GM Ray Farmer at Kansas City. So I still think they are hedging their bets.

Having said that, I do agree with your conclusion: if they wanted Tim they would probably have looked at him now. So the Browns are probably on the out list.

Do not lose heart though. There may be behind the scenes machinations we are not privy to. It is possible that Sexton wants to wait until after the draft to see what circumstances Tim would be walking into, since this will realistically be his last shot. Also, remember that last season Tim did not sign with the Pats until June 12, six weeks after the draft.

    4. One more thought: right now, 9 teams only have 2 quarterbacks on roster. Each of those teams carried 3 quarterbacks during preseason last year. No team would go into training camp with just 2 quarterbacks. That would be nuts.

The Browns, Raiders, and Vikings are expected to draft a QB. That still leaves 6 teams who need to add another QB for camp, some of whom will not draft one. So, after the draft there will be another round of QB releases and signings.

If Tim does not get on board with a team that really wants him, he still has a decent chance to get on board somewhere as a camp arm. At least that will give him a chance to showcase his improved throwing motion. With luck he might get on a team like the 49'ers that has a friendly system.

    5. I'd love for this to happen, but if I were an HC, I wouldn't be bringing in a guy w/an under-50% completion to be a 'camp arm' when there are so many guys available who have a much higher completion percentage. And those guys wouldn't be bringing the intense media scrutiny of my every decision w/them. So I still lean towards the following 3 scenarios: someone who believes in Tim, someone who's desperate, &/or someone who just wants to cash in on his marquee value.

Argh. Tyler Thigpen & Vince Young (although I'm happy for Vince)? How many more 1, 2 & 3 year contracts can the Browns shell out to QB's this spring ... amazing.

Too bad. I agreed with Ed and many on this thread the Browns would have been an interesting option for Tebow.

I wonder if Thigpen & Young's 1-year deals are guaranteed through this season?

The options are narrowing to be sure.

    1. I seriously doubt either of them got any guaranteed money. They had zero negotiating power, and were just happy to make a team.

The interesting question will be who the Browns keep. They are nearly certain to draft a QB. That means of Hoyer, Tanney, Young, and Thigpen, at most 2 will stay on the roster after camp. I suspect Shanahan is still addicted to mobile QBs, so it would not shock me at all for them to keep Young and Thigpen, while cutting Hoyer and Tanney.

      Delete
    2. I was thinking the same thing. And if Hoyer gets cut, he could end up back w/Belichick. sigh...

  8. I had been somewhat concerned since no one has shown any interest towards Tim yet this offseason. Although the Young & Thigpen signings are disappointing, I am taking some solace in the fact that Young has been afforded an opportunity after a three year layoff. It gives me hope that eventually the right circumstance & situation will present itself for Tim.

PFT's last mock draft has the Texans, Jaguars & Vikings leaving the 1st round without a QB selected: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/05/07/pfts-final-mock-draft. They are forecasting the following 1st round selections:
    #7: Manziel to Bucs
    #11: Bortles to Titans
#26: Carr to Browns with their 2nd first-round pick

PFT isn't the definitive draft source; but, I tend to agree with their take on QB draft picks in the first round.

All of this can change with trades ... should be a fun evening tomorrow.
