Tebow to the Browns?

At this point trying to pick a spot for Tebow to play seems like a fools errand.  I wrote thousands of words last season analyzing various scenarios where he might get picked up.  None of them happened, and in retrospect it all seems like such wishful thinking.  But I am a diehard fan of Tim Tebow, and diehard fans don't give up.  Ever. In that respect we are no different than diehard fans of any of the 32 NFL teams.  We have just chosen to assign our loyalty based on character rather than geography.  Our loyalty is freely given and fiercely held, and anyone who chooses to mock it can kiss my 4th point of contact.  (Bonus points if you know where that reference came from without Googling it)

So with that said, I do think conditions might be lining up for an opportunity with the Browns.  The following key elements are in place:

  1. A new head coach, Mike Pettine, who knows Tim and is on the record saying good things about him.
  2. A new offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, who loves the read option and mobile quarterbacks.
  3. A new Owner, Jimmy Haslam, who claims to feel a strong sense of duty to his fan base.
  4. A fan base that calls their team the "Factory of Sadness" and desperately needs a dose of hope.

Everyone knows the Browns need a new quarterback.  Between now and the draft, volumes will be written trying to predict what they will do.  Early speculation centers on Johnny Manziel, which some people see as an either/or proposition for Tim Tebow.

I see a Manziel pick as increasing the appeal of Tebow for the Browns.  They both play the same style of football ... designed runs, improvisation, scrambling.  If the Browns pick Manziel, they will need a backup QB that fits in the same system, and Tim does that.  That was the whole argument that Denver gave for getting rid of Tim ... you can't have two different offensive systems, one for the starter and one for the backup.

There are two other reasons that Tebow would be a good compliment for Manziel.  First, Manziel is rather small, and smallish QBs get hurt in the NFL, especially when they run alot.  Tebow is big, strong, and durable, and would be a good hedge.  You can bet that Kyle Shanahan learned from his experience losing RGIII to injury and then watching him become run-shy.

Second, Johnny Football needs a big brother to mentor him on life and professional conduct.  There are a lot of character red flags waving there.  Who has more character and sets a better example than Tim Tebow?

Of course the Browns could also go in another direction.  They could trade for Cousins, who Shanahan is reportedly a big booster of.  They could draft another QB, like Bridgewater or Bortles.  They could cast their lot with Hoyer, who won games last year until he blew his knee out. However, if you are Pettine you have to wonder if Hoyer will be the same player after his injury.

For what it's worth, I still have not given up hope on the Patriots.  Malllet is already the subject of intensive trade rumors, with the Texans reportedly strongly interested.  If he does get traded, opening up a need at backup for Tom Brady, I would hope Tim at least gets a shot to demonstrate his new throwing motion and improved accuracy.

It's going to be a crappy and nerve wracking few months leading up to the draft and training camp.  But I'm I die hard fan, and I won't give up if Tim won't.

edit: the Browns releasing both Campbell and Weeden would be consistent with this outcome.

  1. It may seem in retrospect that all the words & analysis from last season were just wishful thinking, but I will say this: There were about a half dozen teams probably more that would have been better served to have taken heed of those words & actually implemented some of those ideas.

Any unbiased observer that watched the Dilfer piece had to come away knowing what makes Tebow different & why he has our unwavering support. There were some very valuable lessons to be learned in: Character, Determination, Perserverence, & Conviction in the face of incredibly long & difficult odds. In the end these are some of the traits thats makes winners. I agree the cynics can also find my 4th point of contact.

The situation in Cleveland does give us Tebow supporters some reason for hope. I understand the reality of Tim's plight as he tries to get back on a roster & I suppose a backup Qb job is better than no job at all. However wouldn't it be great if the Browns bucked all the conventional thinking & at least gave Tim an equal chance to win a starting job, whether they draft Manziel or any other college Qb. After all he is more mature (physically, & mentally) & has already proven he can win in the league. Also he is probably more determined now than ever before to prove he belongs & he would cost alot less than any unproven draft pick. (Probably wishful thinking but I like it.) The Seahawks had the vision & were not afraid to make Russel Wilson their starter even though they had the higher priced Matt Flynn on their roster & were rewarded with a Super Bowl championship.

I too still like the idea of Tim going to New England. They need playmakers & maybe if they keep 2 or even 3 Qb's they may be able to find some creative ways to utilize his skills.

What about the Jags. The fans there are not going to give up until Tim is signed.

Lastly: There is one other wild card to consider. Although probably not an immediate concern, the A11 league could ultimately have a huge impact on Tim's football future. If not this year then maybe next. If Tim decides he wants to be a starter & no opportunties in the nfl present themselves, he may decide to give the A11 the publicity it wants & take them up on their offer to be the face of their new league. If this were to happen overnight the A11 would have an influx of millions of new fans myself included. These next few months are going to be alot of fun as all of this unfolds.

    1. I try not to make categorical statements, but I will break that rule here: Caldwell will NEVER bring Tim to the Jaguars.

I hope it does not come to the point where A11 is his only option. That would be tacit acceptance that he failed in the NFL. But if push does come to shove, I'd rather see him playing A11 football than hosting "Good Morning America" or making movies. I think he needs to give the NFL at least one more full season, though, so I hope he does not sign with A11 this spring.

  2. Even with all the reasonable points you have made I don't see it happening. All indications are that the Browns are going to draft a quarterback first. Whether that player is Manziel or Bridgewater or whoever, I don't see them making such a costly investment only to mire that player's development in a QB controversy. And there would be one regardless of what is publicly stated about Tim's theoretical role. Even if he were the most suited to be Manziel's backup the 'distraction' and 'circus' tags would follow him right into training camp - fair or not. A brand new head coach and a brand new GM surely are wary of that.

I think it's more likely he gets a look from a team that, while perhaps struggling, isn't viewed as such a dumpster fire. I think someone over at the Rams likes him, for example. They have been rumored several times to have had interest in him since Denver cut him loose. Someone over there is saying 'What about Tebow?' and the timing just hasn't been right. Maybe this spring, though, it's time to give him a look.

^^ All that said, take heart: My Tebow Prediction Accuracy record stands at 0%, which in its own way helps support your Browns theory.

My thoughts on the A11: I really like the idea of a spring stadium league, and I wouldn't be disappointed at all to see Tim hook up with one. The problem is that right now the A11 is 90% talk and 10% substance. And most of the talk is about how bad they want Tim to be the face of their league. It could be that with the SEC Network gig, Tim is positioning his commitments to accommodate playing for the A11 next season; but the longer this 'courtship' goes on the clearer it is that the A11 has to do more than announce plans to get any serious attention from Tim, or the public for that matter. Buying the team names from a defunct league that was popular for two seasons 30 years ago is not enough.

  3. The Browns are a logical choice, as are the Patriots. Heck, Dallas should be calling Tim. But I still believe that the NFL has an unofficial blacklist of Tebow. They'll consistently, and hypocritically, use their myriad of excuses, but not much else makes logical sense anymore.

I truly hope I am wrong, but time will be the tell. The NFL sucks without him; but I don't think they care. They're only interested in making billions, their tax-exempt status and violating the publics 4th amendment rights to simply attend a football game in person.

PS - It sure was nice watching the Denver Donkeys choke big time in the S.B. ;) #karma

  4. Per this article, the new Browns GM has already decided to draft a QB in the 1st round: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/02/16/ray-farmer-knows-which-qb-he-wants-but-isnt-saying/

No big surprise there. Whether it rules out Tim as a backup depends on the playing style of the QB. Also, there are no "sure things" in this year's draft, so anyone who drafts a QB will need to have a few other options in case their rookie QB is not ready to start right away.

  5. It is worth noting with all the pre-draft posturing going on how low a profile Tim has kept since those Super Bowl commercials.
